Six fire engines are attending a blaze at a private school.

Crews were called just before 12.30pm this afternoon to Claremont School on the A21 Ebden’s Hill, near Hastings.

One witness noticed “lots of smoke” from the school entrance across the road and said traffic was at a stand still.

She said they decided to turn around away from Hastings as “the smoke was getting thicker”.

The fire appears to be from a smaller building on the school site.

An East Sussex Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said: “We were called at 12.26pm to smoke and flames seen in a roof on Ebdens Hill, Westfield.

"Firefighters from Bohemia Road The Ridge, Bexhill, Battle and Hertsmonceux are in attendance.
