Motorists are facing severe delays due to the closure of a main road.

On the A259 Westbound from Seaford to Newhaven, there is a one way system in place.

Part of the A26 was closed for three days due to ice and flooding and there are severe delays as a result.

A commuter told The Argus: "I was going to get the train but they were cancelled too.

"The delays are massive and it's a nightmare.

"Traffic is stretching all the way back to Seaford and crawling at about three miles per hour."

This comes as a council leader has called for urgent improvements to the section of the A26 which has been closed.

The A26 has now reopened but there are still delays in the area.

Lewes District Council leader James MacCleary said: "It would be more understandable if we were talking about a small side road here, but this is a major route that carries a high volume of heavy traffic.

“Newhaven is a port and the A26 is supposed to take the heavy vehicles that come off the ferry as well as trucks and lorries going to and from the industrial estates.

“Closing it for three days (and counting) has major knock on effects for local people.”

Currently, traffic is queueing for three miles and travel time is 35 minutes.
