Residents near a flooding hotspot have expressed their anger at problems which have still not been fixed as a road was closed due to two feet of standing water.

Homeowners in Denton Road, Newhaven, are left battling the cost of flood damage to their properties, said Councillor Sean MacLeod.

“This road floods every year,” said Cllr MacLeod. “But this is the worst I have seen it.”

Cllr MacLeod lives near Denton Road and has seen the damage to residents’ properties. He said he could not believe how much water made it into the homes.

A new development was built near Denton Road, and Cllr MacLeod campaigned against it at the time.

“I remember this application as it was the first planning application I have campaigned against it was 2016 and it just seemed insane that this was ever considered for development especially when people used to go down the road in canoes when it flooded.”

He said a natural spring runs through the village and means the road floods at least once a year in the nine years he has lived nearby.

“I would not be surprised if canoes could use this road again, it’s deep enough.”

Cllr MacLeod is campaigning for better drainage and expressed concern that these extreme weather events would only get more frequent.

“We need better infrastructure, drainage needs looking at and to be maintained,” said Cllr MacLeod.

“This needs more care and attention. Residents are furious and have had enough.”

The road has been closed while fire fighters attend to the flooding and attempt to make it passable for motorists.

The road remains closed and the floodwater is believed to be around two foot deep.

According to Cllr MacLeod, highways team are assessing the situation, but it is thought to be too deep for anything to be done at the moment.

East Sussex Highways have been contacted for comment.
