Parliament has approved redrawn ward boundaries for the city’s upcoming local elections.

Most ward boundaries have been redrawn across Brighton and Hove, with two new wards created by the changes, Round Hill and Kemptown.

The new boundaries will also see the Hove Park neighbourhood merge with parts of Withdean to create a “Westdene and Hove Park” ward, with Brighton Marina and Roedean joining Whitehawk in a “Whitehawk and Marina” ward.

However, the number of councillors will remain the same at 54.

More than 1,000 people and organisations commented to help draft the city’s new wards, with plans to divide Patcham scrapped after opposition from residents.

The recommendations underwent a 40 day period of parliamentary scrutiny and will now come into force for the city-wide elections in May.

Colin Mellors, chairman of the Local Government Boundary Commission for England - an independent body that proposed the changes, said: “We are very grateful to the people of Brighton and Hove.

“We looked at all the views they gave us and they helped us improve our earlier proposals.

“We believe the new arrangements will deliver electoral fairness while maintaining local ties.”

Voters in Brighton and Hove will go to the polls to elect their new councillors on May 4.
