Part of one of Brighton's main shopping streets has been taped off.

The pavement outside Sports Direct and Decathlon was taped off today for safety reasons.

A pedestrian notice on the bus stop outside states: "Danger! Pathway closed to fix loose fascia panels on the roof. Do not use the pathway. As there is a risk of injury and death. Please use other side of the road."

A notice in the Decathlon window also states that it is closed due to maintenance work.

It came after fire crews were called to Hove Town Hall following reports that the building had been damaged by high winds.

Firefighters were at the scene of the incident in Church Road and Norton Road in Hove as gusts of up to 45mph batter the Sussex coast, with a cordon set up around the building, also today.

A bystander told The Argus: "There is a lot of police tape and pedestrians are having to walk in the road as the pavement is closed off.

"A man in a hi-vis jacket is standing there in the rain to make sure no one enters the building.

"It's difficult to see any actual damage but I saw some silhouettes of people in the windows - I think they might be working on them."
