Possible flooding near rivers and high levels of groundwater have led to a number of alerts issued across Sussex.

Multiple alerts are now in place as heavy rain continues to batter the region with residents being urged to prepare a flood plan.

The Environment Agency are urging people to avoid entering areas that are prone to flooding, including low-lying paths by rivers. It is also feared that property may be affected.

In alerts issued on the government website, Environment agency flood alerts said: “With the rain that has already fallen, groundwater levels in the valley are expected to continue to rise throughout this week. Start acting on your flood plan if you have one.

“Avoid using low lying footpaths or entering areas prone to flooding.”

Currently nine flood warnings are in place across the area in:

  • Aldingbourne and Barnham Rifes
  • Climping Seafront
  • Patcham
  • West Dean, Singleton, Charlton, East Dean and Chilgrove
  • Upper Ouse
  • Western Rother

Flooding in the area is described as “possible” across the regions and residents are advised to begin implementing flood plans for their properties.

In some areas it has also been suggested that sewerage systems may be affected by groundwater flooding.

Up to 20mm of rain is expected to fall today.
