A Brighton restaurant has been named among the best in the world for vegans, in a new list from the Financial Times.

Terre à Terre on East Street was included in the list of ten restaurants, which has picks from Barcelona, Bali, Mumbai, Sydney and more.

Tofu Vegan in London and Oak in Bath made up the rest of the UK representation on the list.

In describing the restaurant the Financial Times wrote: "Founded 30 years ago by two classically trained chefs, Terre à Terre has gone from a tiny vegetarian hotspot to one of Brighton’s most sought-after restaurants.

"Today almost all of the menu is vegan; this is the place for croquettes, frits and fried cauliflower."

On the review site Tripadvisor the restaurant is also well-received, having achieved a 4.5/5 rating from 2,983 reviews.

The history of Terre à Terre

Terre à Terre opened up in 1993, founded by friends Amanda Powley and Philip Taylor.

On the restaurant's website, it says they joined forces to "upturn the world's perception of meat-free cooking" and see how far they could push boundaries at the time.

They started out at a site in Pool Valley but their "growing reputation" allowed them to move to bigger premises at East Street.

Recycling, food waste management and sustainability have always been at the heart of Terre à Terre's ethos, as well as making sure they ethically source all their ingredients.

It adds: "First and foremost, it’s an establishment that serves outstanding food. It also just happens to be meat-free."
