An MP’s Twitter account appeared to be hacked after the profile picture was changed to a photo of Elon Musk.
Gillian Keegan’s Twitter account was seen replying to tweets and sharing a link for a range of cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin and Dogecoin.
While the Chichester MP’s banner remained the same, tweets posing as Ms Keegan included links to a website advertising the online currency.
All mentions of Ms Keegan in her Twitter biography, photo and banner have now been removed.
In one tweet replying to YouTuber Mr. Beast, Keegan’s account wrote: “Don’t let it get away! It’s going to be awesome!”
In another reply to opticians Specsavers, those who own the viral cryptocurrency Dogecoin, once backed by new Twitter owner Elon Musk, were described as “a #dogecoin warrior fighting for the future!”
The Education Secretary’s account appears to have been hacked shortly before 7.30pm on Christmas Day, when the tweets began to appear.
Tweets promoting the cryptocurrency have been sent throughout the evening and into the early hours of the morning on Boxing Day.
The Chichester MP’s office have been approached for comment.
