There have been more than 100 arrests for drink and drug driving offences in December, Sussex Police's Chief Constable has announced.

Chief Constable Jo Shiner hailed the success of a new campaign to deter drink driving which includes police checks and new technologies.

The statistics were revealed as the force attempts to crack down on drunk drivers across the county.

Sussex Police Chief Constable Jo Shiner said: “Already this December we have seen more than 100 arrests of drink and drug drivers as part of our annual Op Limit campaign.

“But we are policing the roads 24/7, every day of the year, and while officers can’t be everywhere, they could be anywhere.

“We are determined to catch offenders and prevent them causing serious harm to themselves or other road users.”

The campaign comes at the same time as Roads Minister Richard Holden visited Sussex Police to see some of the new technologies being used to tackle drunk drivers.

Technologies being used include Automatic Number Plate Recognition and a new laser mapping system.

The laser system can be used to map collisions involving serious injuries or fatalities.

Mr Holden also met Jo Shiner as well as Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne as part of the visit.
