Residents took to social media after The Argus asked “what’s your favourite independent shop in Brighton and Hove?” and came up with a variety of answers.
Among the most popular shops listed was fashion and homeware store Velvet, in Church Road, Hove.
One commenter said that Velvet “comes to mind straight away”, adding “we must cherish our independents”.
Another woman added: “Velvet!!!!!! By far the best!!”.
Among the other independent businesses to be championed was The Dials gift shop, in Dyke Road, Hove.
Claire Sherwood said: “Always a stunning variety of presents for everyone, gorgeous jewellery, candles and clothes. Everything I’ve bought from there is fabulous quality and stylish. Would thoroughly recommend.”
Another business which garnered a lot of support was Fullerton’s card shop, also in Dyke Road.
The business has been “happily supplying cards, stationery and balloons” for nearly 40 years.
Chris Betts said the shop “has a great selection of cards” and that “the guys that work there are always cheerful”.
Ruth Sanders said it was “useful having Fullertons next door” and added: “I love the Dials. Loads of gorgeous things and great for presents.”
Other businesses across the region also received high praise.
Callum Grant called homeware store And Halt in Hannington Lane “a beautiful shop with so many beautiful things. A must visit every time I’m in Brighton”.
Quaff Fine Wine Merchant in Portland Road in Hove was also praised by residents for its wide selection of wine and craft beer.
Areas such as Seven Dials, The Lanes and North Laine have been championed as a good place for independent businesses.
Brighton was recently named as the best city in the UK for independent businesses, beating places such as London and Edinburgh.
