There was travel chaos and widespread disruption as Sussex was blanketed in the first snowfall of winter.
People across the county had to abandon their cars after up to five inches of snow came down from Sunday afternoon into Monday morning.
Some roads were impassable due to the snow and ice, including the A21 in Hastings and A259 coming out of Eastbourne, near Eastbourne Downs Golf Club.
East Sussex Highways said it would be gritting major roads at 6pm yesterday, as well as at 4am today.
Workers also gritted minor roads at 9pm yesterday.
A yellow weather warning for ice was extended until 9am today due to light snowfall yesterday and freezing temperatures overnight.
Temperatures will remain freezing until around 10am today but will only rise to a high of 3C at midday.
The coldest of the weather will move north to Scotland over the week, with temperatures rising to 10C by Sunday in Sussex.
Brighton and Hove City Council has been covering more than 150 miles of road across the city, prioritising A roads, most B roads, bus routes, links to schools and roads that lead to hospitals or are vital for emergency services.
Teams have focused efforts on clearing carriageways for drivers, followed by footways for pedestrians and replenishing stocks in the city’s 400 grit bins.
The council has urged people who have to travel to take extra care and to drive to the conditions.
The disruption in Sussex started on Sunday afternoon when at least six cars were involved in a crash in Saddlescombe Road, near Devil’s Dyke.
One woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Haywards Heath, Ditchling and other nearby towns had some of the heaviest snow on Sunday evening.
Yesterday, a train got stuck on the Littlehampton to Hove line just before 7am.
The rescue train also got stuck which meant the line was blocked for much of the day.
No trains were able to use Eastbourne Station and people were asked to make other arrangements.
Southern Rail urged people not to travel.
Around 30 planes due to arrive at Gatwick Airport were cancelled due to the freezing temperatures and ice on the runway yesterday.
Dozens of motorists were forced to abandon their cars in the snow across the county on Sunday.
The Bear Inn near Hailsham, welcomed 40 stranded motorists for the night and The Lamb Inn in Eastbourne Old Town offered refuge for motorists stuck on the A259.
Eastbourne saw more snowfall from noon yesterday but cars on the A259 were able to get free.
Hundreds of homes were hit with power cuts in Haywards Heath, Crawley and parts of Eastbourne.
UK Power Networks said the problem should be solved by the early afternoon.
More than 60 schools were closed or opened later than normal due to the icy conditions.
Several schools have announced they will be opening later today to clear ice and snow and ensure it is safe for students and staff.
