Artisan doughnuts have come to the city with the opening of a new store.
Crosstown has launched its third shop outside London, offering its signature sourdough doughnuts to Brighton residents.
The Argus team has tried some of the shop's most popular creations in order to find the best of the bunch.
Crosstown’s selection box included a variety of twists on classic doughnuts with autumn and winter inspired creations.
The Tongan Vanilla Glaze Doughnut is a classic glazed doughnut made to perfection. The firm but light texture of the sourdough provides a fantastic base for the sweet vanilla glaze.
The combination of traditional flavours is a perfect place to start for anyone looking for a simple yet delicious treat. 5/5
In contrast, the pumpkin cake doughnut is much more of an autumn-inspired treat for anyone looking for something sweet but seasonal.
A good amount of pumpkin flavour runs through the doughnut and is lightly flavoured with autumn spices in order to provide a different eating experience for doughnuts. 4/5
Among the doughnuts were also some slightly different twists on flavour combinations such as the ginger and pear doughnut.
Our reporter described the doughnut as “a slightly messier experience than expected” but the ginger-spiked pear compote provided a flavour profile that “worked perfectly together”. 5/5
For those who enjoy a bit of chocolate, the box does not disappoint. A Black Forest cake doughnut was described as having a “deliciously divine” chocolate glaze with a hint of caramel. The indulgent treat is perfect for anyone looking for something slightly richer. 4/5
The chocolate truffle doughnut provided a nice addition to the box, with a dusting of coffee which cut through the sweetness of the chocolate.
Our reporter described this as “a thick doughnut with a decent amount of chocolate melted on top. Careful if you’re wearing white though, the coffee goes everywhere.” 4/5
Finally we came to a vegan option for those wanting a twist on the classic Peanut Butter and Jam flavour combination, instead using blackcurrant compote.
Although described as “ a little too hard”, we concluded that you would never guess that it was vegan. 3/5
Overall the doughnuts were a hit with our team and will go down a treat with the people of Brighton ahead of the opening of the store.
Adam Wills, co-founder of Crosstown, said: “Crosstown goes coastal. We’re excited to be making our way down to Brighton, our third location outside of London following our Cambridge and Oxford store openings.
“In our Brighton store we’ll be serving our award-winning doughnuts, chocolate, and coffee, as well as fulfilling events and catering orders.
Crosstown opens in Sydney Street today, Friday, and is offering 500 free Tongan Vanilla Glaze doughnuts to its first customers.
It will be donating half its profits from the second day of opening tomorrow to The Clock Tower Sanctuary for young homeless people.
