A children’s author has had his debut book read on a television pre-school show.
Brighton-based author Rich Ford had his book Unken Dunken Makes Pancakes read by presenter David Ribi on the Channel 5 show Milkshake! as part of a new Story Den feature.
The book was inspired by Rich’s daughter and brother having fun making pancakes together.
Rich said that he sought to increase the representation of dual-heritage characters in children’s books, as his daughter is British-Nigerian.
He said: “I’ve always loved writing and playing with words. This book gave me a chance to combine that passion with documenting a fun family memory.
“Most importantly, I wanted to increase the representation of dual-heritage characters aimed at early years, pre-school and reception-age children.”
Rich also collaborated with Brighton-based Joel Redmore for the book’s drawings.
Joel said: “My love for illustration has been a part of me from a very early age, and I’m thrilled to have been able to apply that passion to this grounded and down-to-earth story about the special relationship between a girl and her uncle.”
The book is available to buy from local bookshops, with the episode of Milkshake! available to watch on Channel 5’s streaming service, My5.
