A Channel 5 documentary has revealed the stories of some of Britain’s most dangerous prisoners from behind the gates of a high-security prison - including Babes in the Wood killer Russell Bishop.
HMP Full Sutton: Evil Behind Bars investigated one of the country’s most notorious prisons, which was previously home to serial killer Dennis Nilsen, child murderer Ian Huntley and Bishop.
The documentary revealed that the worst sex offenders are locked up separately from other prisoners in the “Beast Wing”, with former inmates recalling that Nilsen and Bishop became friends.
Bishop sexually assaulted and strangled nine-year-olds Nicola Fellows and Karen Hadaway in October 1986, but escaped justice for more than three decades.
He was initially cleared of their murders in 1987 but, three years later, he went on to kidnap, molest and throttle a seven-year-old girl, leaving her for dead at Devils Dyke.
After a nine-week trial in 2018, Bishop was found guilty and received two life sentences.
He died in HMP Frankland in County Durham from cancer in January, aged 55.
HMP Full Sutton: Evil Behind Bars, was first shown on Channel 5 on Wednesday, November 30, at 9pm.
It is currently available to watch on My5, Channel 5's catch-up service.
