A violinist and TikTok sensation reached new heights on a seafront landmark for a special rendition of a Christmas classic.
Esther Abrami has released a video for her adaptation of Walking In The Air from The Snowman, which coincides with the song’s 40th anniversary and was personally arranged by the film’s original composer Howard Blake OBE, who grew up in Brighton.
The 26-year-old recorded the video 450 feet above the city on top of the i360, making her the first solo instrumentalist and first classical artist to perform on top of the pod.
Taller than the London Eye, it offers 360-degree views of Brighton, the English Channel, and the rolling South Downs National Park.
Brighton's Palace Pier can be seen lit up in the video, alongside a twinkling seafront.
This winter, Penguin Random House Children’s is celebrating the anniversaries of The Snowman and The Snowman and The Snowdog based on the picture book by the late author and illustrator Raymond Briggs, who lived in Sussex, with a limited theatrical release of both films, available in more than 70 Odeon cinemas nationwide for six weeks from November 25.
“Watching The Snowman is one of the most nostalgic and special Christmas traditions for so many families and I’m so honoured to have been given the chance to share this special version of the iconic track,” said Esther.
“It was one of the most fun and also most exhilarating performances of my life – attached by a rope on top of the glass pod and with my violin and bow tied to my wrist – something I will never forget.
Filmed by 24/7 Productions, Esther Abrami was the first person to film at night on top of the architectural landmark.
On Walking In The Air, Esther is joined on piano by concert pianist Anne-Gabrièle Douce.
The video is out now on Sony Classical.
