A student who used his savings to buy a MacBook laptop said his heart sank when he opened his Amazon package to find two boxes of Weetabix.
Yoshihito Kamogari has been left out of pocket with no idea of what to do after his Amazon delivery turned into a nasty surprise.
The 20-year-old placed his order for an Apple MacBook Air on Wednesday, November 16, using the money he had saved from his job at a Japanese restaurant.
The business student, who is currently in his second year at the University of East Anglia, had originally planned to use the money to fly home to Japan for the Christmas period.
However, as he was unable to afford the flights, Mr Kamogari decided to stay in the city and order a new laptop instead.
But when his order turned up on Friday, November 18, there was no laptop in sight.
He said: "When I opened the package and there were just two boxes of Weetabix my heart sank.
"I was gutted.
"So I contacted Amazon straight away but they just froze my account.
"I have no idea what's going on. I think I have been scammed."
Luckily, Mr Kamogari had bought the laptop with a monthly payment of £279 - rather than the full figure of £1,399.
But he said he has been unable to cancel the direct debit while his Amazon account has been frozen and he has "not received any support from the company".
A spokesperson from the online marketplace said: "We have been made aware and have launched an urgent investigation."
Mr Kamogari's boss Shun Tomii, owner of the Shiki restaurant in Norwich, has been helping his young employee to seek answers from Amazon.
He added: "This has been so stressful for him - he can't eat cereal anymore.
"Amazon didn’t explain what happened and they assumed there was some violation of policy and they froze his account so he couldn’t contact anyone at all.
"The bank said they can't cancel his direct debit because it depends on Amazon.
"I'm trying to gather as much information as possible to help him get out of this horrible mess."
Mr Tomii also believes that his employee has been the victim of some sort of scam.
He added: "I searched online and there are other people like Yoshi who have received Weetabix boxes after placing Amazon orders.
"This is totally not his fault."
