Brighton lanes are different from your average city shopping area, but just what about the lanes makes them so one of a kind.
It all started in the 16th century back when Brighton was called Brightelmstone and the cobbled lanes were home to a fishing community which, mainly used the lanes for trading and small markets. Later on, the lanes became better known for its antiques and some of the antique shops have still remained to this day. Nowadays the lanes on the outside haven’t changed, but on the inside they are filled with different kinds of independent shops.
The independent shops range from shops like Snoopers Paradise which is all things vintage to Soctopus. Snoopers Paradise contains things from bucket hats to old Disney magazines, books, cameras you think of it and it’s probably in there! Soctapus unsurprising sells socks, but with all kinds of funky designs on them. Another place to look around is the open market which, is exactly what it sounds like – lots of market stalls to nose around selling things like plants, sewing materials, jewellery and definitely make sure you don’t miss the beautiful graffiti on the way in and out. Don’t worry too much if you miss the graffiti as Brighton is filled with bright, bold and colourful designs thankfully making them very easy to spot. Cool graffiti is also located on most of the green electrical boxes on the streets nearby, so keep your eyes peeled!
There are so many other independent shops and hidden places in the lanes which are worth a visit on your next daytrip out.
