A town has received more rain in a day than in the entire summer combined.
With areas of Sussex underwater due to flooding, Hastings Borough Council reported that the town had received over 40mm of rain from 9am on Wednesday, November 16, to the following morning.
The total blows the statistics for June, July and August out of the water, with only 38mm of rain recorded in the area over the course of three months.
A spokesman for Hastings Borough Council described the statistics as “incredible”.
He added: “We had widespread surface water flooding in many places in town on Wednesday and into Thursday morning, as did much of Sussex, and these rainfall statistics help explain why - over 41mm of rain in 24 hours is exceptional.”
On Wednesday, a volunteer for the council recorded 41.3mm of rain in Hastings. Combined with information from Tuesday, November 15, the town experienced 55.4mm of rain across the two days.
The 48-hour total is around 35 times the 1.6mm total for the entire month of July.
