The deputy leader of the council has given up sweet snacks as part of a fundraising challenge for a food bank.

Hannah Allbrooke, who represents Brunswick and Adelaide ward on Brighton and Hove City Council, is raising money for the Cornerstone Community Centre in Church Road, Hove, by taking on a “No Sweets November” challenge.

The food bank, which opened last year in Cllr Allbrooke’s ward, invites people to come along and receive support for two hours every Friday.

She said: “The demand has been extreme. I have supported the food bank with personal donations, as well as donations from my councillor ward budget, but they need more help.”

Cllr Allbrooke, who described herself as an “extreme snacker”, said: “I’m sure the challenge will be difficult for me - but nowhere near as difficult as the predicament of people who are going hungry because of the absolute sham of our government.”

She has so far raised £390 of her £500 goal, which will go towards helping the food bank fund the purchase of food.

Donations of food can be brought to the centre on Friday morning, to be passed on to families needing support in the BN3 area.

Those seeking support can access help from the centre every Friday from 1pm to 3pm by appointment only. Slots can be booked by calling 07483 819293 or emailing cornerstonefoodbank3@gmail.com.

According to the council, over 6,000 people in the city access emergency food every week in Brighton and Hove.
