A Liberal Democrat candidate for an upcoming council by-election has said he has the skills to become a “very effective councillor”.
Stewart Stone will stand to represent the party in the Wish ward by-election on December 8, triggered following the death of long-serving councillor Garry Peltzer Dunn in September.
Mr Stone, who was brought up in Brighton and lives locally, previously ran in the Rottingdean Coastal by-election in May, placing sixth.
On being selected, he said: “I firmly believe that the skills I’ve developed will allow me to become a very effective councillor.
“I am passionate about fairness and equality in the workplace, education, effective social services, raising housing standards and improving the environment.”
Should Mr Stone be elected, he would be the first Liberal Democrat councillor to sit on Brighton and Hove City Council for more than a decade.
Also contesting the by-election are Labour candidate Bella Sankey, Peter Revell for the Conservatives, and former councillor Ollie Sykes for the Green Party.
At the last local elections in 2019, Garry Peltzer Dunn beat his Labour rival by 146 votes.
Nominations for the by-election close at 4pm on November 11, with residents in the ward having until 11.59pm on November 22 to register to vote.
