An environmental group is asking for people to donate the cost of a cup of coffee to help oppose a second runway at Gatwick Airport.
Communities Against Gatwick Noise Emissions have launched the campaign to coincide with the COP27 summit, saying that a new runway would cause significant environmental damage.
According to CAGNE, a second runway would add around a million tonnes of carbon emissions to the atmosphere each year as well as causing damage through greenhouse gases.
In a statement, a spokesman for CAGNE said: “As the average coffee costs £3.10 CAGNE is hoping to raise money to help with the challenges early next year as Gatwick goes to government to seek planning permission for Gatwick 2.”
The group, formed in 2014, aims to oppose an expansion to Gatwick Airport due to concerns with the environmental impact.
Gatwick Airport says on its website that the runway expansion would “reduce delays, bring new global connections and allow us to grow”.
It also estimates around 18,400 new jobs would be created by its plans.
