A children's charity has issued a statement after a couple were jailed for neglect.
The NSPCC spoke out over the neglect of seven children by an Eastbourne couple.
Christopher Bennett, 35, and Gemma Brogan, 41, were jailed for six years each after a judge told them they had shown profound indifference and prolonged and serious neglect.
"This is hugely distressing case, and we hope these seven children are now receiving all the support they need," said a spokeswoman for the NSPCC in London and the South East.
Police were called to the house in Eastbourne in June last year after Bennett rang 999 and told the operator he was going to stab Brogan.
Officers spoke to him through an open bathroom window for 20 minutes.
When police went in, they found a seven-year-old covered in dog faeces asleep next to a dead dog.
The child was dressed in just a nappy and had matted hair.
Amy Packham, prosecuting, told Lewes Crown Court: “The seven children have been subjected to prolonged and serious neglect, serious cruelty and deliberate disregard for their welfare.
“They suffered serious psychological and developmental harm."
The NSPCC spokeswoman added: "These children should have felt safe and cared for in their home, but Bennett and Brogan put themselves first with complete disregard for the children’s welfare, resulting in them living in devastating conditions.
“It is vitally important that anyone with concerns for the safety or wellbeing of a child contacts the relevant authorities immediately."
The charity urges parents and carers who are struggling, and anyone with concerns about a child’s wellbeing, to contact the NSPCC helpline on 0808 800 5000, or email help@nspcc.org.uk.
"The NSPCC practitioners provide free and confidential help and advice and can take appropriate steps to help keep children safe,” the spokeswoman said.
