Footage shows the moment a man was arrested at Lewes Bonfire, which has attracted criticism over whether proportionate force was used.

Video from the scene of the arrest in Western Road in Lewes shows several officers surrounding a man, who is heard shouting “you’re f**king nicking me, for what”,

The man could also be heard shouting “f**king scum, f**king d**khead” to police.

He is then brought to the ground by police, with more footage from the scene showing the man being held down by around four officers.

Sussex Police confirmed that a 22-year-old man from Haywards Heath was arrested on suspicion of homophobic public disorder and assaulting a police officer.

Jasmin Hughes, who was visiting Lewes for the annual procession and displays with her mother, father and sister, described the police’s actions as “aggressive” and questioned whether their “heavy-handed” behaviour was appropriate.

She said: “My family and I were extremely disturbed by the incident, along with many bystanders.

“The handling of the man seemed disproportionate for a public disorder arrest.”

Jasmin also said that her mother was “physically pushed back” by a policewoman when she attempted to see if the man was safe when being restrained by officers.

She said she did not see the man assault any of the officers detaining him.

Sussex Police have been contacted for further comment.
