A man was arrested at the Lewes Bonfire celebrations after allegedly assaulting a police officer.

Thousands took to the streets of the town yesterday evening as parades of people carrying flaming torches marched through, along with effigies of Vladimir Putin, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak and Guy Fawkes that were later destroyed in bonfires.

A spokeswoman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said that one person had been arrested at yesterday’s festivities for a public order offence.

The fire service also confirmed that crews from St John’s Ambulance and the South East Coast Ambulance Service treated a “small number of people for minor injuries”.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said that a 22-year-old man from Haywards Heath was arrested in Lewes last night on suspicion of assaulting a police officer and of homophobic public disorder He remains in police custody.

Emergency services, local authorities and transport operators worked closely with bonfire societies and the local community to prepare for the annual event, which saw thousands brave the wet and windy weather to watch the processions and displays.

Chief Superintendent Howard Hodges said: “This year’s bonfire celebrations have passed without significant incident, and on behalf of the multi-agency group, I’d like to pass on our thanks to the community of Lewes.”
