Sussex could face more flooding with more rain forecast

A yellow weather warning for rain is in place for the entire county until 4pm this afternoon, with the risk of delays to train services and road journeys, as well as flooding of homes and businesses.

It comes after the county has been battered by several days of wet weather which has caused widespread flooding.

In Barcombe Mills, a road turned into a river by the severe weather, stranding two lorries, while a brave driver tried to navigate a deep puddle of water near the University of Chichester.

A spokeswoman for the Met Office said: “Following recent heavy rain, which has left the ground saturated, a further spell of heavy rain is likely during Sunday, clearing eastwards through the afternoon.

“Around 20-30mm of rain is likely fairly widely, with some places perhaps seeing 40-50mm.”

The weather service forecasts that Brighton could see thunderstorms from around 2pm this afternoon, with wind speeds reaching up to 36mph.

Flood alerts are in place for the following parts of Sussex:

• River Adur East Branch - Burgess Hill to Henfield
• Scrase Bridge Stream and West Common Stream - Haywards Heath and Lindfield
• Upper Ouse - Slaugham to Barcombe Mills
  • River Uck
  • Cuckmere River

Those hoping for an end to the wet and windy weather will be sadly disappointed, with a wet start to the week forecast for Brighton and much of Sussex.

Heavy rain is expected with winds of more than 40mph tomorrow, with light showers changing to thunder in the afternoon on Tuesday.
