Defects to train tracks are causing delays, Southern has warned.
Speed restrictions over defective track between Brighton and East Croydon are causing disruption to trains running between these stations.
Trains may be cancelled, delayed by up to 20 minutes or revised.
Disruption is expected until the end of the day.
A Southern spokesman said: “Overnight, GTR have been informed of Network Rail engineers discovering two separate issues with the track.
“These have been found at Clayton Tunnel, south of Hassocks, and Stoats Nest Junction, south of Purley.
“The combined restrictions are leading to delays, and unfortunately we will have to wait for an overnight closure of the affected lines before repairs can take place.”
As a result of the defects there is a speed restriction of 20mph on the London-bound line near Hassocks.
There is a severe speed restriction of 5mph on one of the two London-bound lines near Purley.
Therefore
- Gatwick Express services will be reduced
- Thameslink services will be suspended on the route between Gatwick Airport and Bedford via Redhill (other routes will still operate, including trains between Brighton and Bedford, and between Horsham and Peterborough via Redhill).
Alternative options
- People can use any Southern, Thameslink or Gatwick Express train interchangeably with their ticket (peak time restrictions still apply).
- This means people can take the next available train and change where necessary.
- Some Thameslink trains may stop at additional stations to cover for cancelled services via Redhill. Information will be shown on journey planners.
- People can also use METROBUS and Southdown PSV Buses between Three Bridges / Gatwick Airport and Redhill, including stations en route.
