Wheelie bins were seen "floating" down the road as heavy rain caused flooding.
The bins in Lucraft Road, Moulsecoomb, were submerged in water.
One bystander told how he saw them "floating down the road".
A man was also seen trying to unblock a drain on the road.
Sussex has been hit with a third of its monthly rainfall in one day, causing havoc for commuters.
The county has reportedly seen 30mm of rainfall so far.
The average for Sussex in November is 110mm.
Trains were severely delayed this morning due to flooding and signal failures at Littlehampton.
A yellow weather warning for rain was put in place from midnight until 3pm today.
And a new yellow weather warning will be in force from 8pm tonight until 6am tomorrow.
