Rescuers came to the aid of a duck stuck in mesh in the middle of a reservoir.

The duck was spotted trapped in a floating mesh planter island in the middle of the Shornden Reservoir in Alexandra Park in Hastings.

A team from the East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service (WRAS) discovered that the animal had managed to get underneath some damaged netting and got stuck.

Senior rescuer Keith Ring waded out to the island using a rescue dry suit, buoyancy aid and safety rope and, after a section of the netting was lifted up, the duck was able to escape.

Once back on dry land, rescuers noticed the duck was not settling or leaving the enclosed water area, so to ensure it could warm up on land, the volunteer team returned with a net to encourage the bird into the vegetation for safety.

East Sussex WRAS, founded in 1996, was set up to provide a front-line rescue service for wildlife casualties who, unlike their domesticated cousins, do not have owners to help look after them.

Based in Whitesmith near Lewes, their team of volunteers provide free support and receive as many as 4,000 calls every year.

The charity is fundraising to build a new rescue centre to help prevent casualties from ending up at local vets and being euthanised or being taken home by well-meaning members of the public and not receiving suitable veterinary treatment.
