MPs in Sussex have reacted to Liz Truss’s resignation after just 44 days as Prime Minister.
From calling for a general election to one describing her swift exit as a “revolving door of chaos”, the county’s Members of Parliament have voiced their frustration at the latest crisis to hit government.
Caroline Lucas, Green MP for Brighton Pavilion, called for a general election.
“Liz Truss’s leadership has run out of road – and our country has run out of patience,” she said.
“It’s not just Liz Truss’s breath-taking incompetence that the country has been lumbered with – it's the chaos and division at a time when we need unity to tackle the problems we face.
“Those problems are multiple: a tanking economy; a cost-of-living scandal; a climate emergency; a natural environment under attack.
“We need immediate solutions: to reduce inequality with progressive taxation, including a wealth tax; to keep people’s bills down and homes warm with a nationwide insulation programme; to protect and restore nature with an effective environmental land management scheme; to tackle the climate emergency by investing in cheap, home-grown renewables and keeping fossil fuels in the ground for good.
“But Tory psychodrama will not deliver them. We cannot go on like this – anything other than a general election is an undemocratic and outrageous result of this shameful mess.”

Labour MP for Hove and Portslade Peter Kyle also said it was time for an election. “This revolving door of chaos cannot continue," he said.
“We’re seeing crisis after crisis made in Downing Street, with the British public paying the price.
“The Tories have lost their mandate to govern. Labour would deliver a fresh start for Britain, with our plans to grow the economy and rebuild the country for a fairer, greener future.
“We need a general election, now.”
Tim Loughton, MP for East Worthing and Shoreham, said yesterday was "not the best day to be a Conservative MP" after chaos erupted over a vote around fracking.
However, following the Prime Minister's resignation, he said "today is looking better".
A spokesman for Conservative MP for Arundel and South Downs Andrew Griffith was unavailable for comment. The MP also serves as a Treasury minister.
Liberal Democrat candidate for Eastbourne and Willingdon, Josh Babarinde OBE, said Liz Truss "trashed" the economy.
"Boris Johnson failed our country and Liz Truss trashed our economy," he said.
"People in Eastbourne and Willingdon deserve better than this.
"This Conservative Party has proven time and time again that it is not fit to lead our country.
"We need and deserve a General Election now. We cannot let Conservative MPs get away with propping up any more chaotic governments.
“The next election in Eastbourne and Willingdon will be a choice of five more years of Conservative party chaos, or a hardworking Liberal Democrat MP who puts local people first.”
