A football star has revealed that he received racist abuse following Brighton’s Friday evening game.
Brentford striker Ivan Toney tweeted with screenshots from his Instagram account of messages from a man calling him a “black c***”.
The tweet, which was sent out the morning after Toney scored both goals as Albion lost 2-0 to Brentford, has been condemned by his club.
In his tweet, Toney wrote: “I wasn't even going to post this but I woke up angry” alongside screenshots of the message sent to him.
A statement from Brentford said: “Last night, Ivan Toney was subjected to disgusting, racist abuse via a direct message received on social media.
CLUB STATEMENT: Ivan Toney
— Brentford FC (@BrentfordFC) October 15, 2022
“We condemn this discriminatory behaviour in the strongest possible terms. An attack on one of our players is an attack on all of us.
“Ivan will receive the full backing from the Club and from the Brentford fans who we have already seen condemning the abuse.”
The club say that they expect strong support from the police and Instagram’s parent company, Meta, one the issue.
Screenshots of the man's profile from Toney's post show that he is not from Brighton and it is not thought that he is an Albion supporter.
The Premier League also issued a statement, condemning the abuse as having “no place in football or society” and adding that they would support investigations.
