A STATUE of Queen Victoria has lost a limb.
One arm of the marble sculpture in Victoria Gardens, Brighton, is missing, after apparently being cleanly sliced off.
It is not known how or when the damage occurred.
A spokesman for Brighton and Hove City Council said they hope to repair the monument as soon as possible.
He said: “We were very sad to see the damage caused to the statue of Queen Victoria.
“The damage was discovered last week. Unfortunately, we do not know how it was caused.
“We have the broken pieces in safe storage and arranged for a local specialist to inspect the damage and provide us with a report.
“We plan to repair the statue as soon as is possible.”
The statue depicts the Queen, who ruled from 1837 to 1901, in the act of opening parliament and was presented at the opening of Victoria Gardens in the city centre for her Diamond Jubilee in 1897.
Queen Victoria’s sculpture, made by Carlo Nicoli from The Sculptured Marble Company, is seen wearing the Garter sash, holding a scroll in her left hand and her robe in her right.
It is the left arm that is missing from the statue.
