THE South Downs has been named one of the best places to hike in the country.
The national park ranked eighth in a list of hiking spots across the UK and was particularly commended for its family friendly trails.
The region beat the Yorkshire Dales and Dartmoor National Park in a survey conducted by Millets. The research measured many different factors including the number of child-friendly restaurants and family-friendly campsites.

Around half of hiking routes in the South Downs are under 10km, making them accessible for adults and children, with 17 per cent of walks also considered child friendly and 58 per cent of restaurants considered family friendly.
Other factors considered in the rankings included the nearest beaches to the area, average temperatures and the overall number of visitors.
Popular trails in the national park include the South Downs Way, stretching 160km from Eastbourne to Winchester in Hampshire.
Other walks along the South Coast also proved to be popular, with the New Forest ranking top on the list.
