PART of the A27 has been closed in both directions following an accident involving a motorbike.
Congestion has built up along the road from Kingston and West Firle after the incident between the Southerham Roundabout near Lewes and the Beddingham Roundabout, with motorists facing severe delays.
Pictures on social media purporting to be from the scene show police attending the incident with a long line of vehicles caught up in the traffic.
Police have described the incident as "serious" and said the road will be closed “for some time”.
A spokesman for Sussex Roads Police said: “The A27 has been closed in both directions between Beddingham and Southerham roundabouts near Lewes and will be for some time.
“Please find alternative route and avoid the area if possible.”
A diversion is in place along the A22 northbound for traffic heading west.
