With regard to the article about piers in need of protection (The Argus, March 28), once again The Argus states the importance of involving public lottery funding in what are clearly private and commercial projects.

My response to this suggestion is to ask whatever happened to good old market forces and private enterprise free from interference by the state and local authorities?

Bognor Pier is privately owned. Why are the present owners unable to maintain and make viable the pier under their own steam without resorting to begging bowl tactics?
