I read Andrew Harries' opinions about eco burials (Letters, March 28). He suggests that cremation is more environmentally friendly than eco burials but doesn't explain why.
Every cremation uses 20 litres of fuel and releases 160kg of CO2 into the atmosphere. Many people have mercury fillings and burning them releases toxic gases into the environment.
Eco coffins are fully biodegradable and therefore the bodies inside them decompose quickly. They are also usually cheaper. There are many natural and woodland burial sites being developed all over the country for eco burials. I strongly recommend people consider eco burial rather than cremation. For more information check out Brighton's own eco burial shop, Arka, in Surrey Street and Islingword Road, or call 01273 766620.
