Patients who are facing the prospect of going blind are entitled to have their sight saved by the use of a drug now available on the NHS (The Argus, March 31). Now that West Sussex Primary Care Trust has decided to pay for the drug Avastin, 30 patients across the county can now begin treatment which may save their sight.
Avastin has proved to be successful in slowing the progress of age-related macular degeneration which is the biggest cause of blindness in Britain.
Avastin is widely used privately but has not been generally available on the NHS.
All efforts should be made by health care authorities to preserve the quality of life of all patients who are facing the prospect of blindness as a result of this disease.
