A pensioner flung herself in front of a train this morning.

The woman, aged between 70 and 75, jumped onto the tracks as the train approached.

She leapt in front of the 9.04 Brighton to Bedford train as it pulled into Three Bridges station at 9.42am.

Paramedics pronounced the woman dead at the scene.

Police received a call earlier that morning reporting a missing woman.

Officers suspect it was relatives concerned for her welfare.

Inspector Gary Ancell of British Transport Police in Brighton said: "We are trying to trace her next of kin.

"A woman had earlier been reported missing from Crawley. We have launched an investigation to see if it was the same woman."

Police stood guard to stop passengers using platform two while the woman's body was removed and officers carried out their investigations.

Witnesses should call British Transport Police on 0800 405040.
