Simon Eaton of Stanford Road complains about the erratic collection from recycling boxes (The Argus, March 28). It is not the collection that is at fault, it is the boxes without lids.

I walk past a house every day which has six open boxes permanently on the pavement outside. The long-suffering collectors empty the boxes of recyclable materials fortnightly on the appointed day, understandably leaving the non-recyclable materials behind in the box.

People walking past the open boxes drop their litter into them. They are like open dustbins attracting even more non-recyclable materials.

Sometimes I move the open boxes into the garden so we no longer have to walk past this unsavoury sight.

The solution might be to redesign the boxes with hinged lids.
