I cannot understand the problem of keeping pupils in school at lunchtime (The Argus, March 27). I went to Varndean High School from 1976-80. The school day was from 9am to 4pm with an hour for lunch.

We did not leave the grounds until 4pm because we were not allowed to. I do not think there can be so many more exits now than 28 years ago so I can only conclude that the schools do not have the same rules as back in my day when you wouldn't think of leaving the school before the end of the day.
