A £9.3 million flagship performing arts building has reported damp problems three months after opening.

Such are the concerns at Central Sussex College's Haywards Heath campus that remedial work is to be carried out by developers Longley Kier.

A college spokeswoman said: "We are investigating some water seepage in parts of the building. These sorts of things are not uncommon with new buildings. It's a temporary issue likely to be resolved very soon."

There have also been issues with the type of paint used, resulting in scuffing along the walls.

The performing arts centre and theatre at the college in Harlands Road is the first phase of a £24 million redevelopment programme at the college.

The theatre, called The Hub, seats up to 260 people and is alongside two rehearsal studios, two dance studios and a music suite, designed in collaboration with the Brighton Institute of Modern Music.

Haywards Heath town councillor Paddy Henry said he was astounded to hear about the problems. He said: "For £9.3 million you would think everything would be done.

"It's an awful shame but often with these public sector buildings you spend millions of pounds and then you spend enormous amounts of time rectifying errors."

Phase two of the development includes a visual arts studio and digital photography suite for media and arts students.

The performing arts building will be officially opened on July 1.

A spokeswoman for Longley Kier said: "The Longley team is aware of the problem and is working closely with the college to address and resolve the issue. The cause has been investigated and remedial works to rectify the problem will begin in the near future."
