In answer to the question from David Stevens about the location of the statue of Sir John Cordy Burrows (Letters, March 31), this is now at the southern end of the Old Steine, opposite the Royal York Hotel. I have a special interest in Sir John because he was a leading light in the Brighton Mechanics' Institute, founded in 1851 for the adult education of working men.
During the Brighton Festival Fringe I will lead guided tours of Woodvale and Extra Mural Cemeteries which include a visit to the grave of Sir John and that of his friend James Howell who rose from poverty to play a prominent role in Brighton's intellectual society.
