Many years ago the burghers of this splendid city contrived to give us wide avenues through which horse-drawn vehicles could progress in a steady and stately manner.

The finest of these was Grand Avenue leading to The Drive.

Now benefiting from all the progress available to civilisation, the town planners - I use the term loosely and with no respect - have contrived to reduce the possible flow of traffic to a trickle.

This traffic, however, becomes stationary when a bus stops to pick up or discharge and on the happy day when the poor dustmen call - thou shalt not pass - and the road becomes a dead end.

If this can be called progress then I hesitate to foresee what can happen in the future.

Brighton and Hove nowadays consists of many no-go areas for traffic. Residents will soon have to drive out of town to the "park and ride" and pretend to be visitors.
