A driver crashed his car into a ditch hours after buying it at auction.
The roof of the white Volvo was cut off by firefighters to free the injured man.
The accident happened on the A23 near Pyecombe just after 1pm yesterday.
One lane was closed northbound while emergency services dealt with the accident.
Police, firefighters from Brighton, Worthing and Hurstpierpoint, two ambulances, the Sussex Police and Ambulance Helicopter and the Kent Air Ambulance all attended the crash.
The driver, a man from London, was believed to be returning from an auction in Brighton where he bought the six-year-old car.
He was taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton but his condition was not thought to be life-threatening.
The road was cleared by 3.40pm.
Councillor Christopher Maidment of Mid Sussex District Council called for the road to be upgraded.
The dual carriageway is dubbed "Blood Alley" by residents living nearby because of the number of accidents.
Coun Maidment said: "This is yet another example that the road is past its sell-by date and needs to be improved."
