For many years West Street has been mainly known for being at the centre of Brighton's night life.
But this picture shows that a century ago it was also extremely busy during the day with numerous shops and pubs.
Victorian buildings shown here on the west side of the street were swept away by Brighton Council for road widening and redevelopment between the wars.
Some buildings on the east side still survive - but not the Academy cinema, one of the first in the resort when it opened in 1911.
It closed in 1973, when the new Odeon multi-screen cinema was built in redevelopment of the Top Rank Suite.
At the time this picture was taken, some people still lived in West Street. Part of it again became residential last year, with the opening of new flats on the east side on the site of an old post office depot.
