Selma Montford writes on the subject of public consultation and the response of local authorities to the outcome (Letters, March 19).
May I say that in Adur District Council, councillors debating a report which advised them on a decision which would lead to a council with leader and cabinet system had clearance in writing to ignore the result of a public consultation.
The legal officer, in presenting his report, made clear to the councillors that public consultations were not referendums and as such could be ignored.
Is it possible that public consultations are, as suggested, a waste of time and a misleading practice?
