Although well intentioned, I do not think that paving slab messages give visitors a good first impression of Brighton (The Argus, March 18). For many the first view of Brighton they see is Queen's Road, North Street and West Street while making their way to the main city centre and beach. Placing messages about the dangers of rape and violence in Brighton is not very encouraging to say the least.
Health experts are quite right the messages will catch people's eye, but I am not sure they will reflect on these as their evening progresses. Brighton does have a serious binge-drinking problem which brings it own obvious health concerns and dangers.
But for many Brighton is a main holiday destination where visitors come to enjoy themselves. Highlighting the dangers to visitors is not a good idea.
