Musical theatre is astonishing in the way it can make people behave.

By the end of this production, hundreds of ostensibly normal, sensible members of the public were whooping and cheering, punching the sky and generally behaving like ten year olds at a High School Musical show.

Former Pop Idol entrant and boyband member Craig Chalmers takes the lead role, a casting seen by some as questionable given that he was the seventh of 12 to be voted out from Any Dream Will Do.

Runner-up Keith Jack is demoted to narrator, which he handles convincingly, while fellow participants Chris Barton and Antony Hansen are Joseph's brothers.

Loosely based on a Bible story, Joseph tells how a favourite son is sold into slavery by his 11 jealous brothers, and imprisoned in Egypt where his dream-interpreting skills find favour with the Elvis-inspired Pharaoh.

Explained entirely in song, the show is a riot of energy, colour and great music, with a palpable feelgood factor. And my daughter thought the talking camel was very funny.
