Councillors Gill Mitchell and Warren Morgan are right to campaign for the Madeira Lift to be repaired and reopened (The Argus, March 15).

It is a vital service for many who live in Kemp Town. Its closure for more than a year means hundreds of wheelchair users, parents with buggies and the elderly are effectively prevented from reaching the beach, playground and amenities of Madeira Drive.

With the lift out of action the only alternatives are a long walk via Palace Pier or Duke's Mound, or drive and pay the expensive parking charges on Madeira Drive.

The neglect of this historic lift is another example of Madeira Drive being allowed to fall into a sad state of disrepair.
