I would like to congratulate Stuart Bower for his letter about clamping (Letters, March 17). His knowledge of the laws on this subject is impressive and he has clearly delved into it in depth.

If what he says is correct then why have local councils not overruled these activities? In his letter he states that a fine is only legal after someone has been found guilty in a court of law.

While I would like to believe him, I feel sure that he has missed a point of law somewhere which allows these clampers to carry on business as they do.

Please reassure me. I would love to see this practice, which causes so much misery, stamped out.
