Opening with an instrumental, Foals began as they intended to go on with an intense blast of one-note-fits-all vocals, high guitar picks and speedy, driven percussion.

Playing tracks from their debut album Antidotes - due for release on March 24 - the Oxford-based five piece lived up to the recent hype, giving the audience exactly what they expected.

The show was both a sonic assault and a visual treat, with each member of the band silhouetted against a backdrop of smokey-coloured lights.

Like a revved-up version of Bloc Party, young singer and guitarist Yannis Philippakis' voice sounded hollow yet well controlled, while drummer Jack Bevan's techno-style beats dominated the venue.

The repetitive nature of their music can't be denied and won't be everyone's cup of tea. But, as the audience hopped around to tracks like Heavy Water and Hummer, it was obvious the band had struck the right balance between guitar and dance music.
